As if Amazon.com wasn’t already trying to rule the world, now they’re getting into the travel game.

Word on the street is that Amazon is set to launch its own travel service for independent hotels. The properties featured will all be within a few hours from New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

The website Skift spoke with a hotelier who was contemplating participating in the service. The unnamed source said that Amazon used TripAdvisor ratings as one of the criteria for selecting properties to participate and would only use properties rated four stars and above.

But it would be more than just hotels. According the hotelier, Amazon Travel also plans to provide tips and guides about attractions and things to do at a destination. The site will also provide the opportunity for Amazon to suggest retail items that travelers might need for an upcoming trip.

Another hotelier that Skift talked to said he has already signed up for the service and thinks the partnership will be good for their business. “Amazon has a huge customer database to leverage, and that would be one of the attractions of signing up.”

Amazon has dabbled with travel partnerships in the past with Expedia and SideStep, but this would be their first solo venture into the travel world.

Amazon has not responded to the report.

The Amazon.com service is likely go live on January 1.
