Oklahoma loses freshman Buddy Hield 4-6 weeks with fractured foot

Tournament time in college basketball is just about a month away and there are questions on the minds of Oklahoma fans after freshman guard Buddy Hield suffered a broken bone in his foot in a 75-48 win over TCU on Monday.

Those questions are: Will Hield's absence be too much to overcome disrupting chemistry and preventing the Sooners from reaching the NCAA tournament unless they win the Big 12? And if Oklahoma can overcome losing its fourth leading scorer, third-leading rebounder and leader in steals, will Hield get back in time to help in the postseason?

The Sooners look like a tournament team at 16-7 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12 with a signature win over Kansas last week, and the good news is this weekend's trip to play at No. 17 Oklahoma State is the last remaining regular season game against a ranked opponent. The next most difficult opponent remaining is Baylor.

Just two days ago Hield was celebrating that victory over Kansas on the shoulders of his fellow students who rushed the court at the Lloyd Noble Center after his breakaway dunk at the end put the finishing touch on the upset even though the basket didn't count. Now his season is in jeopardy and it's uncertain what affect losing him will have on the Sooners.

Hield's injury was reported on the program's official Twitter account. He will have surgery Tuesday.

Hield took over a starting role in late December and started each of the past 13 games. He played 20 minutes against the Horned Frogs and scored eight points with two assists and two steals before suffering the injury.
