Next Big Smartphone Technology: Scrolling with Your Eyes

The next big thing in smartphones could be the eye scroll.

The New York Times reporting today that Samsung’s (SSNLF) next generation Galaxy phone will let consumers use their eyes to scroll through text, according to a person who has tried the new phone. Samsung wouldn’t confirm the report but it did file for a trademark in Europe under the name “eye scroll."

Samsung has scheduled a press conference on March 14 in New York to announce its new Galaxy S IV smartphone. The South Korea-based company currently leads the smartphone market globally but Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 5 overtook Samsung's Galaxy S3 to become the world's best-selling iPhone in the fourth quarter, according to Strategy Analytics.

Apple hasn’t announced when it will offer its new iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 5S but today Japanese blog MacOtakara, reports that Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo has slashed Android phone orders for the fall, which is fueling speculation that an iPhone deal is on the way. Jefferies' Peter Misek has said that the next Apple iPhone could debut as early as June.

Yahoo! Finance's Jeff Macke says a Samsung smartphone eye scroll is an example of Samsung outspending Apple on research and development.

“Last year Samsung spent over $10 billion on R&D; Apple spent $3 billion,” says Macke, who like many others argues that Apple should be spending its billions of dollars in cash rather than hoarding it.

“Eye scrolling would be a huge leap forward,” says The Daily Ticker’s Aaron Task and just one more example of a new, cool technology like Google (GOOG) Glass and Apple's iWatch.

But which company is the most innovative? Macke says it’s Samsung followed by Google and then Apple.

“Samsung and Google…are innovating,” says Macke. “They have enough cash to try things. If they don’t work it’s not going to kill the company."
