Another Nightmare for Uber: Driver Kills Pedestrian in New York

An Uber driver killed a man in New York City on Saturday. It’s just the latest in a string of problems for the taxi-hailing company.

Driver Aliou Diallo was en route to pick up a passenger when his black Mercedes SUV struck and killed 27-year-old Wesley Mensing, who was named one of the top young golf instructors in America by Golf Digest and gave lessons in Manhattan and New Jersey. Mensing was crossing the street at the corner of East 62nd Street, holding the hand of his girlfriend Erin Sauchelli when the accident occurred.

According to Uber, Diallo stayed at the scene and gathered a small crowd of bystanders to lift the car off the two pedestrians. Mensing was pronounced dead at the scene. Sauchelli was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families and loved ones of those involved in this tragic accident,” Uber said in a statement. “We are providing the NYPD all information that can assist in their investigation.”

Diallo had completed nearly 1,300 trips at the time of the crash and had high ratings from reviewers.

This isn’t the first time an Uber driver was responsible for the death of a pedestrian. On Dec. 9, Syed Muzaffar was charged with the death of a 6-year-old girl in San Francisco after he failed to yield as she crossed the street with her family.
