‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart goes to Gitmo in ‘Camp X-Ray’

We all knew this day would come eventually: “Twilight Saga” actress Kristen Stewart is finally headed for the notorious U.S. detention camp in Guantanamo Bay.

No, not really. What may sound like every hardcore Robert Pattinson fans' dream come true (she broke his heart!) is actually a new role for the 23-year-old actress eager to put her “Twilight” past behind her.

According to Deadline, Stewart is set to take on some serious and seriously timely subject matter in "Camp X-Ray," a movie about a young female soldier who is sent to guard detainees at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The crux of the story is that Stewart’s character forms an unlikely friendship with a young man who has been imprisoned at the camp for nearly a decade.

Written and directed by graphic-designer-turned-filmmaker Peter Sattler (“Star Trek”), “Camp X-Ray” is being produced by Sattler’s pal and frequent collaborator “Pineapple Express” director David Gordon Green. Given Stewart’s high profile, combined with the controversial Gitmo again dominating the news in recent weeks thanks to a series of prisoner hunger strikes, the indie film is sure to attract a lot of attention when it begins shooting later this summer.

“Camp X-Ray” is just one of several decidedly mature projects Stewart is now attached to. In addition to joining "Secretary" director Steven Shainberg's upcoming "The Big Shoe," the actress is also set to star alongside Juliette Binoche and Chloe Moretz in French filmmaker Olivier Assayas upcoming drama "Sils Maria.”

Stewart's memorable (and barely clothed) turn in Walter Salles adaptation of "On The Road" last year proved she can handle this kind of hefty material, and the experience evidently lit a fire of sorts under her. Despite recent confirmations that she'll also be appearing in the big budget franchise sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman," Stewart is obviously hoping these astute career moves -- involving projects by some extremely talented and respected filmmakers -- will help her make a clean break from the teen vampire fare that made her a star.
