USC targeting FGCU coach Andy Enfield

ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Southern California is targeting Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield, sources said.

Enfield burst onto the national scene over the last two weeks coaching little-known Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16, the first 15 seed to ever advance that far in the NCAA tournament.

It was more than enough to put the 43-year-old Enfield on USC's radar.

While Enfield, a former Florida State and NBA assistant coach, has few recruiting ties to the West Coast, USC is intrigued by not only his success and potential, but his preferred uptempo style of play.

FGCU became known as "Dunk City" due to its high-octane system that could play well in Los Angeles. USC competes for basketball fans with not just UCLA and other area colleges but the Lakers and Clippers NBA franchises that play just a few miles from campus in the Staples Center.

FGCU's season ended Friday night here in a 62-50 loss to Florida. A source said talks between the school and coach are expected to begin this weekend.

Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins also remains a candidate at USC, which fired Kevin O'Neill during the season.
