Get feedback and know your audience. Kat Cole, president of Cinnabon, says you should know yourself, your audience, and your environment. "Get feedback on how you present yourself physically, how you come across verbally, how you influence people, and how you make others feel," she says.

Get an internship. "It really helps if you meet somebody whose actually doing what you want to do," says talk show host Wendy Williams. She advises to get an internship and absorb everything around you.

Build relationships. Tig Notaro, a comedian, says in addition to being good at what you do, people also need to get to know you personally. "When people like you, they're like, 'Oh, yeah, I've seen them around. I'll listen to them. I'll check them out,'" explains Tig.

Stay current. Hair stylist Sally Hershberger says you should stay current on the latest news and trends. "You need to know what's going on in the New York Times. You need to see movies. You need to know the arts," advises Sally. "You need to be educated, because that's part of being successful."
