Ben Affleck Wears a Good Luck Message From His Daughter

Ben Affleck cleaned up right for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Thursday. He donned his sleek tuxedo, shined his shoes, and added the most adorable accent to finish the look: scribbles all over his hands.

As he walked the red carpet with his hands stuffed into his pockets, some may have simply read the body language as that of disappointment from his lack of a Best Director Oscar nomination, but they’d be wrong. He just didn’t want to share the sweet, yet indecipherable messages from one of his daughters either Violet, 7, or Seraphina, 4.

However, when he won for Best Director, he was sure to show his appreciation for his good luck artwork.

“My daughter wrote my name on my hand for luck,” Affleck, 40, said in his acceptance speech. “I don't know how that works, but I guess it worked, so you can look forward to seeing more of this! I want to thank my kids and I want to thank my wife, without whom I would not be anywhere, much less here.”

For many, the sweet nothings were overshadowed by the interesting timing of Affleck’s receipt of the award. Mere hours earlier, he was denied an Oscar nomination in the same category, a fact some feel was the biggest snub of the entire awards season. The omission wasn’t lost on Affleck, either.

“I would like to thank the Academy,” he said at the beginning of his acceptance speech, quickly adding, “I’m kidding, I’m kidding. This is the one that counts.”

Quite a few stars have openly shared their disappointment at Affleck’s lack of directing recognition by the Academy, including Bradley Cooper and Oscars host Seth MacFarlane.
